Graduate College Symmetry, Geometry and Arithmetics

The Graduate College Symmetry, Geometry and Arithmetics (SGA) at the Mathematics Center Heidelberg (MATCH) of the Faculty for Mathematics and Computer Sciences is dedicated to fundamental research in mathematics with an emphasis on geometry, topology, algebra, and arithmetic. Chief director of the program is Prof. Rainer Weissauer. Specific subject areas studied at the Graduate College are:

  • Anabelian geometry,
  • Arithmetic of function fields,
  • Automorphic forms and representations,
  • Computational arithmetic geometry,
  • Galois groups and their realizations,
  • Geometry and moduli,
  • Iwasawa theory,
  • Topology of singular spaces.

The development of pure mathematics in the last decades shows cross-border approaches between different areas of mathematics to be most fertile. The aim of the Graduate College is thus to introduce young researchers into such-like areas. In order to do so the SGA provides five PhD fellowships in a structured three-years program for highly qualified students with an excellent background in Pure Mathematics. These grants range from october 2010 to september 2013 and are financed by the graduate academy of Heidelberg University according to Landesgraduiertenförderungsgesetz.
